A Master (in His) Class

Once again we had the absolute pleasure this month of welcoming a wonderful group of people to our Masterclass in Landscape Archaeology  , which is quickly growing in popularity year on year.

People travelled from all across the UK , and beyond, with one person coming from Canada and another from France! With pick up points arranged and public transport timetables navigated , everyone arrived safely in time for our Welcome meal, courtesy of Jim & Janice at the Low Byer Country Manor Hotel, all in good spirits and ready for a weekend of learning.

Stewart Ainsworth, ably assisted by Al Oswald of York University , introduced the group to the art of landscape archaeology – looking at, reading and interpreting the lumps and bumps left in the landscape from the past before spending two days out in the field to explore Epiacum and it’s environs.

We want to say “thank you” to everyone who came along, those who experienced Epiacum for the first time and went away inspired and enthused . And especially to say thank you to Stewart & Al, who have designed a site-specific programme and who never fail to inspire.

The weekend is suitable for anyone, even those who have no prior experience or knowledge. Stewart’s passion is to make this landscape come alive and for archaeology to be accessible to all (an aim that we at Epiacum share too!)

We are looking forward to lots of photos to share and a report from one or more of the group .

But if you are interested, we are planning to run another weekend in 2020 and are keeping a waiting list, so get in touch if you would like to join us!
