Our volunteer network is affectionately nicknamed The Second Nervians.
The name comes from the only Roman army unit so far identified to have definitely served at Epiacum, the Second Nervian Cohort, or to give them their Latin name cohors II Nerviorum civium Romanorum – you can see why we went for a nickname.
The Second Nervian Cohort would have consisted of around 480 men recruited from the Nervii tribe who came from the region of what is now northern Belgium, around Brussels. They were certainly stationed at Epiacum at the beginning of the third century and probably spent a lot of time remarking to each other that it was a lot flatter back home.
The logo on the right is based on seals found on lead shipments at Brough-under-Stainmore that had come from the garrison at Epiacum.
Whilst our volunteer network is named after the Roman garrison, our work covers all the historical periods and peoples who called this place their home- from the stone and bronze age, through the iron age and Roman period, to medieval times and the 19th century.
