We’re pleased to announce the next event in our 2026 evening talk series at The Nook Farm Shop & Café, and this time we’re hearing from one of Epiacum Heritage’s own young volunteers.
On Thursday 24th September 2026, we welcome Wilf Bazley, UCL archaeology student and Epiacum Heritage volunteer, to share some of his experiences of studying archaeology and, more importantly, putting it into practice in the field.
“Life as a Student Archaeologist”
From molehills at Epiacum to trenches at Vindolanda, Wilf has been gaining first-hand experience of archaeology alongside his university studies. This talk provides an opportunity to discover just what life as a student archaeologist involves.
Wilf will take us through some of the projects and practical archaeology he has been involved with, sharing his experiences as a young volunteer at Epiacum and his developing career in archaeology.
It should provide a rather different perspective from some of our previous talks. It is a chance to hear about archaeology from someone at the beginning of their professional journey, combining academic study with the realities, and occasional mud, of archaeological fieldwork.
For anyone interested in archaeology, studying the subject, volunteering, or simply finding out what the next generation of archaeologists gets up to, this promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Epiacum has always benefited enormously from the enthusiasm and hard work of its volunteers, and encouraging people to become involved with archaeology and heritage is an important part of what we do. This evening offers a chance to see that involvement through the eyes of one of our younger volunteers and to hear where it has already taken him.
