SUMMARY:Nenthead Mines
DESCRIPTION:Mining has shaped the landscape and communities of the North Pennines for centuries\, and few places preserve that story quite as vividly as Nenthead. Its extensive network of mines\, shafts and associated remains provide an extraordinary record of the area’s industrial past. \n\n\n\nPeter and Kevin will take us behind the scenes of some of the fascinating work taking place at the site\, including the restoration of the Brewery Shaft\, the extension of Carrs Mine\, and the use of modern photogrammetry techniques to create detailed records of the surviving underground workings. \n\n\n\nIt promises to be a fascinating combination of industrial archaeology\, conservation and modern technology\, demonstrating not only what survives beneath the North Pennines today\, but the considerable work involved in understanding and safeguarding it for the future. \n\n\n\nFor anyone interested in local history\, mining\, industrial archaeology or the heritage of the North Pennines\, this should be a particularly interesting evening. \n\n\n\nNenthead’s mines are a remarkable survival from an industry which once dominated this part of the Pennines. This evening offers a chance to discover more about the people working to preserve that legacy\, the challenges of conserving an extensive underground site\, and how traditional archaeological investigation is being complemented by new methods of recording and interpretation. \n\n\n\nTo reserve your place\, email info@epiacumheritage.org or call 07921 858 126. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us for another engaging evening celebrating the history\, archaeology and heritage of the North Pennines. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\n\nDate: Thursday 27th August 2026\n\n\n\nLocation: The Nook Farm Shop & Café\, Castle Nook\, Alston\, CA9 3BG\n\n\n\nDoors open: 7:00pm\n\n\n\nTalk begins: 7:30pm prompt\n\n\n\nTickets: £5 per person
