SUMMARY:Life as a Student Archaeologist
DESCRIPTION:We’re pleased to announce the next event in our 2026 evening talk series at The Nook Farm Shop & Café\, and this time we’re hearing from one of Epiacum Heritage’s own young volunteers. \n\n\n\nOn Thursday 24th September 2026\, we welcome Wilf Bazley\, UCL archaeology student and Epiacum Heritage volunteer\, to share some of his experiences of studying archaeology and\, more importantly\, putting it into practice in the field. \n\n\n\n“Life as a Student Archaeologist”\n\n\n\nFrom molehills at Epiacum to trenches at Vindolanda\, Wilf has been gaining first-hand experience of archaeology alongside his university studies. This talk provides an opportunity to discover just what life as a student archaeologist involves. \n\n\n\nWilf will take us through some of the projects and practical archaeology he has been involved with\, sharing his experiences as a young volunteer at Epiacum and his developing career in archaeology. \n\n\n\nIt should provide a rather different perspective from some of our previous talks. It is a chance to hear about archaeology from someone at the beginning of their professional journey\, combining academic study with the realities\, and occasional mud\, of archaeological fieldwork. \n\n\n\nFor anyone interested in archaeology\, studying the subject\, volunteering\, or simply finding out what the next generation of archaeologists gets up to\, this promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\n\nDate: Thursday 24th September 2026\n\n\n\nLocation: The Nook Farm Shop & Café\, Castle Nook\, Alston\, CA9 3BG\n\n\n\nDoors open: 7:00pm\n\n\n\nTalk begins: 7:30pm prompt\n\n\n\nRecommended donation: £5 per person\n\n\n\n\nAll proceeds go directly to support the work of Epiacum Heritage CIO. \n\n\n\nEpiacum has always benefited enormously from the enthusiasm and hard work of its volunteers\, and encouraging people to become involved with archaeology and heritage is an important part of what we do. This evening offers a chance to see that involvement through the eyes of one of our younger volunteers and to hear where it has already taken him. \n\n\n\nTo reserve your place\, email info@epiacumheritage.org or call 07921 858 126. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us for another engaging evening of archaeology\, heritage and life in the field.

SUMMARY:World Heritage of the Roman Frontiers
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to announce the next event in our 2026 evening talk series at The Nook Farm Shop & Café. This month\, we’ll be taking a journey beyond the North Pennines to explore the remarkable legacy of the Roman Empire’s frontiers across Europe\, before returning home to consider Epiacum’s place in this wider historical landscape. \n\n\n\nOn Thursday 29th October 2026\, we welcome Nigel Mills\, Heritage Consultant and former Director of World Heritage for Hadrian’s Wall\, for an evening exploring the internationally significant network of Roman frontier sites and what they can tell us about life at the edges of the Roman Empire. \n\n\n\n“World Heritage of the Roman Frontiers”\n\n\n\nThe Roman Empire once stretched across much of Europe\, with an extensive network of forts\, walls\, roads and military settlements marking and protecting its frontiers. Today\, many of these remarkable remains are recognised as part of our shared cultural heritage\, with several sections enjoying UNESCO World Heritage status. \n\n\n\nNigel will take us on a fascinating journey across the Roman frontiers\, following the great rivers of the Rhine and Danube\, travelling into modern-day Romania\, and exploring some of the extraordinary archaeological sites that survive along these ancient boundaries. \n\n\n\nDrawing on his extensive experience in heritage management and his involvement with Hadrian’s Wall\, Nigel will consider how these sites are understood\, protected and presented to the public\, and what they reveal about the organisation and influence of the Roman Empire. \n\n\n\nImportantly\, the evening will bring us back to Epiacum\, exploring how our own Roman fort fits into the wider story of the Roman frontiers. Although Epiacum lies beyond Hadrian’s Wall itself\, its position\, history and archaeological significance provide an important connection to the wider Roman military landscape of northern Britain. \n\n\n\nFor anyone interested in Roman history\, archaeology\, World Heritage or the fascinating connections between our local landscape and the wider Roman world\, this promises to be a particularly engaging and informative evening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\n\nDate: Thursday 29th October 2026\n\n\n\nLocation: The Nook Farm Shop & Café\, Castle Nook\, Alston\, CA9 3BG\n\n\n\nDoors open: 7:00pm\n\n\n\nTalk begins: 7:30pm prompt\n\n\n\nSuggested donation: £5 per person\n\n\n\n\nAll proceeds go directly to support the work of Epiacum Heritage CIO. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt Epiacum Heritage\, much of our work focuses on understanding\, protecting and sharing the remarkable archaeology of our own Roman fort and its surrounding landscape. However\, it is equally important to appreciate how Epiacum fits into the much larger story of Roman Britain and the Empire beyond. \n\n\n\nThis talk offers an excellent opportunity to explore those wider connections and gain a fresh perspective on the significance of the site we are working to preserve for future generations. \n\n\n\nTo reserve your place\, email info@epiacumheritage.org or call 07921 858 126. \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us for another fascinating evening of archaeology\, history and heritage at The Nook Farm Shop & Café.
